Scholarships

Dear UJAA Members,

In 2018, UJAA was afforded the opportunity to participate in the Alliance of Alumni Associations’ (AJAA in Toronto, Canada) Emerging Global Leaders Jamaica (EGLJ) youth leadership development conference in Jamaica last summer.  The program is for established youth leaders as well as students who have leadership potential but have not yet had opportunities to develop those skills.  Students are typically rising 10th or 11th graders.  Twelve (12) students will be sponsored by our member organizations to this year’s program.

Given the inclusion of students from Toronto in last year’s program, AJAA asked that UJAA consider including students from the USA in this year’s program, which will once again be held in Jamaica at Knox College in Clarendon.  In light of this request, a team, under the leadership of Clair Menzies, UJAA Director, has developed the follow recommendation:

Number of Students:       3

Criteria:

1.       Must be of Jamaican parents (preferably with at least one parent who attended one of the UJAA member organizations)

2.       Must be in either rising 10th or 11th graders

3.       Must be in good academic standing (HS GPA of 30 or better, or average grades of 85% or better)

4.       Must receive two recommendations – from their Guidance Counselor and a teacher

5.       Must be interviewed by a small panel (to assess sociability and fit, and their readiness to be mentors for others, upon their return)

6.       Must submit a written statement (250 – 300 words) of why this experience would be of great value to them

7.       Must have the approval of their parents or guardian.

Process:

  • The attached application is circulated to all members of UJAA for sharing with your members, family and friends.

  • The deadline for submission is:  February 15th, 2019.

  • The students will be selected by March 1st and advised by March 15th of their selection.

Please share this application with all members and friends of your organization who may know Jamerican students who will be become 10th or 11th graders in September 2019.  Note the deadline for applications.
